The Rural Mindset Podcast™ Episode 14 - Hear Me Out, Maybe We Aren't Enough

On this episode of The Rural Mindset Podcast™ I discuss asking for help, not being enough, and learning that we don't have to do everything. After reading a quote from a psychologist (I can't remember who, but I did see a really good Facebook post by Tad Hargrave that elaborated about it a bit more in the same few short days!).

Maybe you aren't enough to handle it all, because you're not supposed to.

Sometimes we don't have the skills, and that's okay!

So what does it mean to be enough? You are enough just as you are. You don't need to be more, to change, or to do more. We simply don't need to be everything.

Maybe we learn to ask for help. Asking for help can be super challenging, but maybe we learn to do that and advocate for ourselves in various ways. It doesn't mean your inadequate in anyway, it's just recognizing that we aren't jack-of-all-trades at everything and that someone has a skillset that you don't.

We can only do so much at once and do so many things in a day.

Personally, I don't like the feeling of spinning my tires and not getting anywhere, so I'm not afraid to ask for help to get myself more momentum from someone who has more education or experience in an area than I do. Also, I have met some super cool people through asking for help! (#sidebonus).

It's okay to not be everything all the time.

It's okay to need help from others.

It's okay to not be a master of every life skill.

Asking for help can look like a whole bunch of different things.

Here are some tips on how you can become more comfortable asking for help:

  1. Give yourself permission to not be everything all the time
  2. Acknowledge that it is strong to ask for help and remind yourself of that
  3. Find help that you are comfortable with and follow your gut intuition
  4. You can change your mind!
  5. Make your needs clear to the individual who is helping you. Write them out or discuss them with someone first.
  6. Pause, acknowledge that it is okay to ask for help, and do it scared. Usually the scary choice is the one we need the most.
