The Rural Mindset Podcast™ Episode 9 - Mental Agility
On this episode of The Rural Mindset Podcast™ you will learn about the difference between resiliency and mental agility. Erica was inspired to create this episode after hearing the quote "instead of pulling people out of the river, we need to go upstream and figure out why they're falling in in the first place." She truly believes that the future of mental health is working on mental agility and creating such strong roots that we can look at challenges and say "bring it on" instead of being able to rise from the ashes after tragedy.
Resiliency is the ability to rise from tragedy, and that is the focus that we has been the forefront of mental health for a while... the what to do after something happens.
Mental agility, however, is our ability to be hit and not fall off our feet. Mental agility requires emotional intelligence, clarity and a growth mindset. Emotional intelligence is when you can sit with, utilize healthy coping strategies, and understand your emotions. Clarity is knowing and recognizing how your body feels and what you are going through. Growth mindset is the ability to say things like "I am still learning" or "I am doing my best." With these 3 things together, we can build strong mental agility so that we can overcome adversity as it is happening and grow as we face challenges.
How do you develop mental agility?
You can read literature or listen to podcasts such as #TheRuralMindsetPodcast that talk about strategies, you can seek professional help to learn preventative tools, you can practice mindfulness and presence to create space between when something happens and how you respond to become truly in control of your emotions and your body, and you can learn to reframe your thoughts and feelings.
That last one can be a tough one. Reframing your thoughts takes time, patience, practice and grace towards yourself. It takes work to catch yourself when you're thinking negatively and it takes time of intentionally paying attention to your internal dialogue to do that, but all you have to do is set the intention of noticing and acknowledging how you speak inside your head and you'll be amazed at how fast you can change it and start to work on it!
If your mental agility is being tested, remember: you have survived 100% of your hardest days. You can survive today too.
